Freshman standout Gabriel Hughes threw eight and two thirds innings, allowing only seven hits and striking out nine batters. With Hughes’ strong outing, the Zags were able to give him some good run support, tallying four runs in the sixth inning to give them a cushion heading into the later stages of the game.
Right fielder Grayson Sterling went 2 for 5 on the day, driving in two RBIs with a double down the left field line, which gave the Zags a four run lead. First baseman Shea Kramer went 3 for 5 on the day, and catcher Ezra Samperi hit a homerun earlier in the game to tie it up at two runs a piece.
The Zags have two more games in the series against the Torreros before heading to Stockton to play in the WCC championships in Stockton, California.
