WSP to increase patrols for 4/20

With April 20th falling on a Saturday this year, Washington State Patrol plans to nearly double its patrol units on Saturday.

The date is a holiday for people who like to smoke marijuana. The number 420 is usually associated with smoking pot, and so 4/20 is a quasi-holiday for marijuana users.

But, the last time 4/20 fell on a Saturday, collisions were at the same numbers that we see after a major holiday or the Super Bowl.

“If you’re going to be out and about, enjoying the festivities this weekend, for whatever the occasion, make sure you have a designated driver, use one of the rideshare programs we have in the area, or simply call a cab,” said WSP Trooper Jeff Sevigney.

So, WSP is increasing patrols starting Saturday afternoon and into Easter Sunday. Troopers want to make sure that we don’t see the same numbers that we did on the last 4/20 Saturday.

“Almost an extra whole detachment of troopers will be working tomorrow night in conjunction with our regular staff,” said Sevigney.

The penalties for getting caught driving under the influence can be very serious.

“Just getting arrested for DUI is very expensive when you consider court costs, attorney fees, up to a year in jail, a $5,000 fine,” Sevigney said.

Not to mention the risk of being in a collision that causes a fatality. That would lead to a charge of vehicular homicide, which could land you life in prison.
