WIC program expands food options for eligible families, still taking applications

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is still taking applications for eligible families in need of food benefits during the COVID-19 crisis.

According to a release from the Spokane Regional Health District, if you are approved, benefits will be uploaded onto a WIC debit card, which you can then use at participating stores.

Benefits apply to pregnant women, women breastfeeding a baby under 1 year old, and women who have had a child in the past six months.

If you’re a parent or are responsible for a child 5 or younger, you can apply for your child.

In order to be eligible, applicants must be a resident in Washington state and have an income at or below 185% of the U.S. poverty Income Guidelines. Federal stimulus checks are not counted toward income, it reads in the release.

The program recently expanded foods available to families. Now, shoppers will be able to purchase string cheese, fruit-flavored yogurt, and an expanded variety of cereals, among other options.

To see the full list of items available, you can download the WICShopper App. Then call 509-324-1620 for more information.
