Whitworth remains undefeated, 7-0 for the first time since 2006
SPOKANE, Wash. — The undefeated Whitworth Pirates used an impressive trio of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away from Pacific in the Pine Bowl, 37-19.
The highlight of the first half on offense for Whitworth was a 72-yard touchdown run by quarterback Leif Ericksen. After going back-and-forth with the Boxers, the Pirates tied the game at 16 at half with a 36-yard Ericksen completion to Brett Moser in the endzone.
That’s where both teams stayed for the entire third quarter, but the Pirates heated up in the fourth. Ericksen hit Garrrett McKay for a 10-yard score to take a 23-16 lead, then Tariq Ellis ran another touchdown in from 28 yards out, after a Pacific field goal.
With an 11-point lead and under five minutes to go, Colten Chelin intercepted a pass from Pacific quarterback JT Greenough and returned it 21 yards for another score, sealing the 18 point victory.
Whitworth is now 7-0 this season, their best start to the season since 2006.
The Pirates host Lewis & Clark in the Pine Bowl next Saturday at 1 p.m.
