Whitworth Bounces Back With OT Winner
NEWBERG, Ore. — Garrett Hull scored a career-high 24 points to lead visiting Whitworth to a 101-98 overtime win at George Fox University on Friday Night at the Wheeler Sports Center.
Hull made 6-10 from three-point range to help the Pirates rally from a 12-point second half deficit and improve to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the Northwest Conference.
Whitworth got off to a good start and took a 24-15 lead on Jared Christy’s layup almost halfway through the first half. The Bucs still led 31-23 when George Fox began to catch fire. The Bruins took a 37-35 lead on a jumper by Mason Green-Richards before Whitworth went back up 42-37 on a pair of Christy free throws. GFU responded with a 7-0 run and took a 47-44 lead into halftime after Thomas Rico made a three-pointer with 31 seconds left.
Another Rico three-pointer extended the Bruins’ lead to 53-46 early in the second half. Green-Richards then hit a free throw to give George Fox a 62-50 lead, its largest of the game, with just under 13 minutes to play. The Bruins still led 80-72 with 4:23 to go on Dylan Hamlett’s layup. Whitworth finally got going and tied the game 80-80 on Christy’s basket. Hull had a big three-pointer during the run.
The Pirates grabbed an 86-85 lead when Kyle Roach hit a three-pointer with 1:02 to play. Whitworth’s chances to win the game in regulation suffered when the Bucs made only 3-6 from the free throw line in the final 60 seconds. Meanwhile, Ryan Lacey tied the game 87-87 with two free throws with 24 seconds left. Roach’s three-pointer with ten seconds left was no good and the Bruins only had a desperation attempt at a shot to win in regulation.
Green-Richards opened overtime with a three-pointer for George Fox, but Hull answered with a three for Whitworth. Ben Bishop’s three-point play with 2:23 to go gave the Pirates a 95-92 lead and Whitworth never trailed again. The teams traded scores from that point, but Whitworth kept the Bruins at-bay and a Ben College layup with seven seconds to go gave the Bucs their final basket. Rico’s final three-point attempt was no good.
Six Pirates finished in double figures, led by Hull’s career-high night. Hull also had six steals and five rebounds in the game. Bishop had 18 points, while Christy finished with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Roach and College finished with 13 points apiece with Roach adding a team-high eight assists. Kevin Crosno came off of the bench for 10 points for the Bucs. Whitworth finished with a team shooting percentage of 56.5 (35-62), but had 22 turnovers.
Green Richards scored 28 points for George Fox (6-16 overall, 2-12 NWC) to lead the Bruins within seconds of a major upset. Rico scored 15 points, while Hamlett, Lacey and Jonathan Doutt all had ten. George Fox went 16-37 (43.2%) from three-point range.
Whitworth will close out the regular season next weekend with home games against Linfield and Willamette.
