Wedding gift stealing suspects arrested

Spokane Valley Property Crimes Unit Detectives arrested 35-year-old Joshua Davies and 25-year-old Sierra Davies Thursday for Theft in the 1st degree and Possession of Controlled Substances charges after the two allegedly stole a gift box from a wedding reception.

On Sunday, August 6, a victim reported a box of wedding cards and gifts was stolen from a wedding reception held at Mirabeau Park Hotel in Spokane Valley. Nobody witnessed the crime, but the married couple had a ‘selfie’ station setup where guests had to have their photo taken before entering the reception.

The couple reviewed the photos and discovered two unknown and uninvited guests had attended the reception. The couple posted the description of the thefts – along with the picture of the thieves – on social media and asked for the community’s help in identifying the suspects.

Detective Jeff Thurman of the Spokane Valley Police Department received a tip that Joshua and Sierra were possibly guests at the Montvale Hotel. Thurman matched the driver’s license photos of Joshua and Sierra with the photo taken of them from the reception.

Thurman, with the assistance of additional Property Crimes Detectives, visited the Montvale Hotel to verify the suspects were staying there. Investigators went to the room registered to Sierra and heard male and female voices inside the room.

The detectives were preparing to obtain a search warrant for the room, but Joshua and Sierra exited the room and were detained.

Sierra explained to detectives that on that night her and her husband Joshua were dropped off at Jack in the Box on Sullivan that day. Having nothing else to do, the two walked to the Mirabeau Park Hotel and saw the reception. She explained the two had watched the movie ‘Wedding Crashers’ and were inspired by the movie.

Explaining that they were hungry and didn’t have any money, the two signed in, had their photo taken, and ate at the taco bar. She admitted to taking the cards and gift box, along with a spice jar.

Detectives recovered what is believed to be some of the victim’s stolen gifts (eight credit cards and a few hundred dollars in cash) in the suspect’s hotel room. Methamphetamine, heroin, scales, and packaging used in drug sales were also recovered from the room.

Joshua and Sierra Davies were booked into the Spokane County Jail for Theft in the 1st Degree, Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver – Methamphetamine, and Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver – Heroin.
