Water main break creates dangerous commute on Highway 195
SPOKANE, Wash. — A water main break on 16th Avenue created a dangerous commute on Highway 195 Tuesday morning.
Water quickly turned to ice as pooled in the frozen lanes. WSDOT scrambled several crews and plows to chip the ice off the busy freeway.
Spokane water maintenance superintendent Loren Searl said the 12 inch cast iron pipe likely burst due to the cold temperatures. Thawed ground that is frozen will move, and the weight is enough to crack water mains.
Several homes along Nettleton Lane had no running water for several hours.
