Washington state sues over President Trump’s abortion policy
OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington state’s top lawyer is once again taking on the President.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson says he will sue to challenge a new policy put in place by the Trump administration which creates obstacles for women to obtain an abortion.
This is not the first time AG Ferguson has fought back against the President. He has now filed nearly three dozen lawsuits against the Trump administration, including over the travel ban and DACA protections.
Ferguson says it’s his job to represent and protect the people of Washington state, and if he feels the administration is making decisions that will harm Washingtonians, he will step in. This time, it’s over President Trump’s decision to bar taxpayer-funded clinics from giving patients referrals to abortion services.
The Department of Health and Human Services policy– which was announced Friday– also prohibits any clinic that recieves federal funding from sharing office space with abortion providers. Ferguson says this provision would force many to find new locations, undergo expensive remodels or shut down.
Ferguson calls the changes unlawful, saying they violate the Affordable Care Act and would worsen a health care shortage in rural communities.
In his announcement Monday, Ferguson said “I think it’s important for the people of the state to know that the state of Washington, the attorney for the people of the state of Washington is there in the courtroom expressing our states opposition to these unlawful policies.”
Ferguson said he plans to file the challenge in federal court in Spokane after the policy is made official with its publication in the federal register. He intends to seek a court order blocking it from taking effect. Eastern Washington has 20 counties, 11 of which would be left without Title X providers, Ferguson said.
Washington will be the first state to officially challenge the new policies, but several other Democratic states are expected to do so as well.
