Washington 4th state to pass 100% clean energy bill

The Washington state legislature has passed what Governor Jay Inslee calls, “the country’s most forward-looking clean energy bill.”

The bill will transition Washington’s electricity grid to 100 percent clean energy by 2045. To meet that goal, the bill phases out coal from the state’s electricity grid by 2025 and holds utilities accountable with strong targets starting in 2030. There will also be worker protections during the transition process and the bill will also increase funding for energy assistance programs for low-income households.

Washington is the first state in the northwest and the fourth state in the country to pass 100 percent clean legislation.

Governor Jay Inslee issued a statement saying, “I look forward to signing this legislation and I thank Senators Carlyle, Palumbo and Billig, and Representatives Tarleton and Fitzgibbon for their remarkable leadership.”
