Unknown medical condition may have killed inmate

OROFINO, Idaho — The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office says a previously unknown medical condition may be what caused an inmate at the Idaho Department of Corrections Prison in Orofino to die last week.
The Department of Corrections said in a statement last week that Alexnader E. Mecklin collapsed in the weight room at Givens Hall.
Staff initiated CPR and called 911. An ambulance transported Mecklin to a hospital. He was pronounced dead approximately an hour and a half after collapsing.
According to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, an autopsy was completed on January 25, 2018 in Spokane and found that Mecklin had a previously undetected medical condition that most likely caused his death.
Toxicology tests are still pending and results are expected in the next week.
