Trooper notices home on fire, wakes up two people inside

The attic of an apartment building near downtown Spokane caught fire Friday afternoon, displacing at least three families who live there.

A state trooper who was driving by noticed the smoke just before 3:00 p.m. The trooper pounded on the door and woke two people who were sleeping inside, alerting them to the fire. Everyone made it out safe.

Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said the flames began in the attic of the building on the 700 block of S. Maple. The exact cause is still under investigation.
