‘Tide Pod Challenge’ a dangerous online trend

The Washington State Department of Health is warning parents about the dangers of a bizarre teen fad sweeping the nation. It’s called the ‘Tide Pod challenge.’ The challenge involves teenagers recording themselves placing Tide laundry pods in their mouths. In the viral videos, teens keep the detergent pod in their mouth until it begins to leak and they spit it out.

“Pods are used for washing machines not for eating,” said David Johnson, with the Washington State Department of Health.

“M y best advice to everyone is put them in you washing machine and not your in mouth because they could cause serious harm,” said Johnson.

Johnson said ingesting laundry detergent could cause diarrhea, vomiting and other serious side effects.

If you intentionally or accidentally ingest laundry detergent, call the Washington Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
