Fire restrictions announced for Columbia River Gorge

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area has announced bans on smoking, building fires and other activities on National Forest System lands in the gorge.The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the restrictions were issued Wednesday because of wildfire risk and will stay in effect until significant moisture lowers the fire danger.

Woman marks Mother's Day with butterflies at infant graves

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - In honor of Mother's Day, a woman in Portland placed about 1,000 decorative butterflies on the graves of infants and children at a local cemetery.KGW-TV reports Jessica Dorrington began placing the figures Friday near the grave of her own young daughter, who died seven years ago. She placed the final butterfly on Saturday.Dorrington says she hopes the gesture will give strength to mothers who also have lost children.

Washington State Patrol troopers file $1M tort claims

Five Washington State Patrol troopers have filed tort claims against the agency, claiming officials knew and didn't do enough about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty exhaust systems in their patrol cars.
