Switzerland rallies to beat Serbia 2-1
Switzerland rallied Friday to beat Serbia 2-1 on Xherdan Shaqiri’s late winner in their Group E match at the World Cup.
With the victory, the Swiss are now even with Brazil atop the group standings with four points each. Switzerland and Brazil played to a 1-1 tie Sunday in their first match of the tournament.
With a win over the already-eliminated Costa Rica in their final group match Wednesday, the Swiss can guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Serbia finds themselves third in the group, having won their opening match 1-0 over Costa Rica. They will wrap up group play with a match against Brazil in Moscow on Wednesday.
Serbia took an early lead Friday at Kaliningrad Stadium off Aleksandar Mitrovic’s header in the fifth minute.
That goal held up through the first half before Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka scored an equalizer at the 52nd minute.
Shaqiri’s winner came six minutes later and the Swiss held on for their first victory of the tournament.
