Sweet Peaks Ice Cream creates Bloomsday-inspired flavor
SPOKANE, Wash. — Sweet Peaks Ice Cream in downtown Spokane is releasing a new Bloomsday-inspired flavor.
“Darkness and Chaos” is a huckleberry ice cream with a fudge swirl and chocolate chunks. Bloomsday founder, race director and ice cream aficionado Don Kardong helped create the new ice cream.
The name is inspired by Kardong’s famous words, “Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos.”
Kardong, an Olympic athlete, was quoted saying those words in an article in the late 1970s.
“We could not think of a better way to honor Don than with his very own ice cream,” said Bloomsday PR/Communications Director Emilie Laakso. “There are few things he loves more, so it seemed like a great fit. Sweet Peaks has been amazing to work with these last few months in getting the flavor, name and design just right!”
The 2019 Lilac Bloomsday Run will be the last for Kardong. He will be retiring from the race director position after the May 5 race.
“It’s been a privilege to be associated with Bloomsday all these years, and to have worked with so many great people who donate their time to make it happen,” said Kardong.
