St. Bonaventure beats UCLA in First Four matchup

The 11th-seeded UCLA Bruins lost to fellow No. 11 seed St. Bonaventure 65-58 in the First Four opening round of the NCAA MEn’s Basketball Tournament.

The Bonnies (25-7) will face No. 6 Florida in the East Regional on Thursday in Dallas.

UCLA (21-11), which has 11 national titles and 47 NCAA Tournament bids in program history, played in its first play-in game. Head coach Steve Alford brought the team to the Sweet 16 in three of his first four years with the team.

St. Bonaventure played in the seventh NCAA Tournament in school history. Their last tournament appearance ended with a second-round loss to Florida State in 2012.

The Bonnies won 13 straight before falling to Davidson in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.

The Bruins beat USC in their final regular season game to complete a season sweep of their crosstown rival. They then beat Stanford in the Pac-12 tournament quarterfinal before losing an overtime semifinal to Arizona.
