Squatters cause thousands of dollars in damage to Browne’s Addition apartment
SPOKANE, Wash. — From a renter’s dream, to a total nightmare. A group of squatters caused three thousand dollars of damage to a vacant Browne’s Addition apartment and Spokane Police are still searching for one of them.
Cody Burgess has multiple felony warrants out for his arrest, and Officer John O’Brien says they believe there is probable cause to charge him with burglary and malicious mischief for the damage done to the apartment.
The bulk of the junk and the waste is gone now, but the smell isn’t.
“The walls are damaged, the carpet is filthy, it’s an absolute mess in here,” said Spokane Police Officer John O’Brien.
During the several weeks the squatters lived inside the apartment, which was furnished and ready to be rented, the group of unwelcome neighbors made it their own.
“I don’t know the exact time frame, but it sounds like a couple weeks they were flopping,” O’Brien said.
Food was ground into the carpets, and there were cigarette butts and drug paraphernalia on some of the floors. Walls in the living room and one of the apartments two bedrooms were painted with graffiti.
“It was a very nice location for people to flop, it’s just disgraceful how the property was treated,” O’Brien said.
SPD responded when a neighbor reported a television missing from the apartment building’s common area, which is directly across the hall from this apartment.
“Officers tried to contact the people here, but they fled out the windows when the officers responded,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien said there have been some issues with people camping in the neighborhood’s Coeur d’Alene Park, and that it’s possible the squatters moved from the park into the apartment. SPD says Burgess is known to hang out in the Browne’s Addition area.
He also said that neighborhood resources officers are working with neighbors to keep the area safe and clean- they ask anyone with information about Burgess’ whereabouts to contact them. The number for Crime Check is 509-456-2233.
