CMS stays alive, Whitworth bows out of NCAA Tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. - Claremont-Mudd-Scrips stayed alive in the Spokane Regional of the 2016 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament by eliminating host Whitworth University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Diana Marks Field.

Anna Gurr scattered four hits in a complete-game pitching performance for the Athenas (35-9-1). She improved to 21-5 after striking out five batters and walking only one.

Tara Robinson gave CMS all the offense it would need in the bottom of the second inning. The Athenas loaded the bases with two outs against Whitworth starting pitcher Madi Perez. Robinson worked a full count against Perez and, on the eighth pitch of the at-bat, lined a double to left field that drove in two runs.

Carlene Roberts added another run for CMS with a double off of the wall in the third inning that drove in Carly Roleder and drove Perez from the game.

Neither team would score the rest of the way as Makayla Lefever threw 3.2 innings of two-hit relief for the Pirates.

Michelle Silva and Tessa Matthews each singled in the fifth inning to give Whitworth a pair of runners on base with only one out. But Gurr got pinch-hitter Megan John on a short fly ball to center field and then got Alyssa Hall to pop out to third base.

Shannon O'Neill had two of the Athenas' eight hits.

Perez fell to 9-10 this season after allowing three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Silva had two of the Pirates' four hits.

Whitworth ends its season with a final record of 29-15 after claiming a second straight Northwest Conference regular season title.

CMS will play George Fox in Saturday's regional finale. The loser-out contest is a rematch of Friday's game that GFU won 5-2.
