Spokane Valley man killed in Highway 2 crash
NEWPORT, Wash. — UPDATE: WSP has identified the man who died in the crash as 38-year-old Jason Cunningham of Spokane Valley, Wash. Cunningham and tractor-trailer were driving northbound on Highway 2, and Cunningham attempted to pass the tractor-trailer in a no-passing zone. Cunningham then hit another vehicle going southbound head-on as he tried to pass.
The person driving the tractor and trailer was not harmed, and the person who Cunningham hit head-on was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center with injuries.
It is unknown whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident. The road was reopened as of 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
Washington State Patrol reported Friday that a two car crash fully blocked Highway 2 in Pend Oreille County, five miles south of Newport.
Troopers at the scene report at least one person was killed in the crash, which involved a commercial vehicle, though their identification is unknown at this time.
The Department of Transportation is putting a detour in place at Gray Road and Coyote Road.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
