Spokane Valley acquires land for future City Hall
The City of Spokane Valley moved one step closer to its own City Hall with the Council’s decision to purchase land located at the southeast corner of Sprague Avenue and Dartmouth Road. The purchase price for the 3.38 acre site is $1,126,759.24 plus closing costs.
Currently a parking lot, the property is part of the former University City Mall, and is in a high-profile area of the city that is already attracting redevelopment. In June 2013 the area saw the opening of a new microbrewery along Sprague just east of the site. In August, Spokane Valley Tech opened its doors just across University Road. A new private event center opened on the Appleway side of the former site earlier this year, and the Appleway Trail is currently under construction along the former Milwaukee Railroad right-of-way that extends eastward from Appleway at University.
The purchase agreement includes demolition and removal of an existing parking structure, access ramp, and related facilities that are located between the former Crescent and J.C. Penney buildings. Those costs will be borne by the seller, Dartmouth, LLC and demolition will be completed by August 1 2015.
Consistent with its “pay as you go” philosophy that has minimized the City’s debt and kept it on solid financial footing, the property will be purchased with money available in its Civic Facilities Capital Project Fund (#310) and Capital Reserve Fund (#312).
