Spokane teachers union approves 13 percent pay raise, school board to vote

Spokane Public Schools’ teachers will see a 13.32 percent raise in their salaries following a tentative agreement reached Thursday night between SPS and the Spokane Education Association.

SPS released the following statement after the announcement was made.

The agreement between Spokane Public Schools (SPS) and the Spokane Education Association (SEA) ratified tonight by the SEA continues the district’s practice of investing in its most important resource – the teaching and support staff – to provide an excellent education for Spokane’s students.

On Tuesday, SPS and representatives from SEA reached a tentative agreement over new contracts. On Thursday evening, the union overwhelmingly voted to accept those terms.

With the pay raise, first-year teachers would earn a salary of $49,056. while the salaries for teachers at the top of the salary schedule would earn $98,756. In total, the average SPS teacher salary would be $80,878.

In addition to the pay raise, the agreement includes 19 hours of compensated time for each certified SPS employee to enrich the educational experience. Known as Professional Enrichment Responsibility Time (PERT), teachers and staff would be compensated by participating in activities related to professional learning outside of their contracted work day.

The School Board is expected to vote on the ratification of the agreement on Sept. 12.
