Spokane residents to cast vote on property tax levy
SPOKANE, Wash. — Special elections ballots are in mailboxes across the city this week and on them is a major decision about city safety.
Voters will have the chance to approve or reject Proposition No. 1, a property tax levy to fund new city police and fire services.
The tax was added to the ballot by the City Council last month.
If passed, property owners would pay 30 cents for every $1,000 of assessed value.
The bulk of that money raised would go toward hiring new police officers and toward retaining 30 of the 48 firefighters that were hired through a grant that expires this year.
