Spokane ranked 2nd least safe city in Washington

Do you feel safe in Spokane?

A report done by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, a national trade organization, has ranked Washington’s large cities according to their violent and property crime rates, and it doesn’t look so good for Spokane.

The report considered cities with 10,000 residents or more, and analyzed data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports from 2017. Violent crime statistics were weighted heavier than property crime, due to their severity.

In total, 80 cities were ranked, and Spokane came in 79th.

According to the report, only Tukwila–a town about 10 miles South of Seattle– is a less safe place to live in Washington state.

The major contributing factor to Spokane’s poor ranking is a reported rate of 76.8 property crimes per 1,000 residents. That’s second worst of all cities listed.

Spokane’s violent crime rate is 5.98 per 1,000 residents. At least four cities listed, including Seattle, reported higher violent crime rates than Spokane.

The report says these 5 cities are the safest places you can live in Washington state: Sammamish, Lynden, West Richland, Camas, and Maple Valley.

The violent crime rates in all of the top 5 cities is less than 1 per 1,000 people.

Spokane Valley ranked a little better than the City of Spokane, coming in at number 63.

Pullman ranked 17th.

About the report:

Cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total (due to their severity) than property crimes.
