Spokane Police investigating car break-in caught on camera

Spokane Police are investigating a crime they don’t normally look into thanks to crystal clear video from the victims.

Police say they wouldn’t be able to investigate a car break-in in the South Perry neighborhood if it weren’t for the video captured on an Owl car camera, which shows a man getting into a car and looking through the side door and center console.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen that, but the picture quality is incredible,” said John O’Brien, a public information officer with the police department. “It’s going to be very easy to identify, hopefully, this person that’s out there doing this vehicle prowling and if he’s doing this one, more than likely he’s doing others.”

O’Brien said car break-ins are typically a hard crime to pursue, but not in this case.

“These people strike in the middle of the night, they’re in and out so fast and rarely do we have quality video,” O’Brien said.

The victim sent the video to KXLY but declined an interview.

Numbers from the Spokane Police Department show there were six other car break-ins in that South Perry neighborhood the same week of the one caught on camera. To look at the crime data from Spokane Police in your neighborhood, click here.
