Spokane PD chief: Gun was not located at scene of police shooting

In what he calls an effort to be transparent, Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl issued a statement Tuesday, saying despite reports of gunshots at the scene of a deadly shooting Monday night, officers did not recover a gun at the scene.

Chief Meidl told reporters Monday night that his officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun in the 600 block of West Montgomery. A neighbor told a KXLY4 reporter that he was the man being shot at.

According to Chief Meidl, “Officers on the scene also advised they observed the suspect holding a long object, which they believed to be consistent with a rifle or shotgun.”

Officers fired shots and said the man, identified late today as 35-year old David M. Novak, ran back into the home. They weren’t sure if he was injured. After securing the neighborhood and bringing in the department’s armored vehicle, they found Novak dead inside. The medical examiner said he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Chief Meidl released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying that the Spokane Investigative Regional Response team is investigating this use of deadly force. Chief Meidl said he did not “want to circumvent that process or protocol, but I feel it is important to provide an update to the preliminary information.”

Chief Meidl said “It was a promise I made when I became Chief – to be as open and transparent as possible and to provide as much information as I can with our community without jeopardizing an investigation.”

He went on to say a baseball bat had been recovered at the scene, but that a gun was not located.

Chief Meidl said the SIRR team will continue to investigate and determine what happened. Officers on the scene were wearing body cameras, which investigators will review.
