Spokane man accused of shooting, killing girlfriend appears in court

Howard Lackey, 49, appeared in Spokane County Superior Court Monday after being charged with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Lackey is accused of killing his girlfriend Keli Jurdy during an argument at home in April.

Lackey is being held on a $1 million bond at the Spokane County Jail. He and his defense team did not argue the set bond Monday.

Court documents say Lackey and Jurdy lived together off and on. According to the documents, a roommate heard Lackey and Jurdy arguing April 7 when he heard what sounded like a gunshot. The roommate said Lackey then came out of his room and said “I need your help. I think I just shot her.”

Jurdy’s family was in the courtroom Monday as Judge Michelle Szambelan ordered Lackey to avoid contacting anyone else involved with the case.

“Make sure that there is no contact whatsoever with Keli Jurdy’s family or any witness named in the police report or anybody who resides with them,” Szambelan said.

The defense team will have another chance to argue against the $1 million bond. Lackey will appear at his next in-custody court date May 15 at 10:30 a.m.
