Spokane gets ready to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
SPOKANE, Wash. – — The third Monday of January every year is reserved to celebrate the birthday of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s biggest voices, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
One of Dr. King’s many inspirational messages was that everybody can be great because everybody can serve their community. That message echoed on the day named in his honor as many people use it as a day of service; a day on, instead of a day off. For former NAACP Spokane president and activist Phillip Tyler says putting ‘we’ instead ‘me’ should be important everyday, not just on January 15 th .
” When you are trying to build that beloved community that Dr. King was looking for, you have to know that doing for others, doing for the greater community, is better than worrying simply about yourself. Its what you can give that can help change and shape your community.”
