Spokane fire crews continue to monitor parking garage that ignited near Sacred Heart

Spokane Fire crews were called to a reported parking garage fire near Sacred Heart Medical Center just after 10 p.m. on Friday night. They arrived to black smoke and scaffolding on fire on the still-under construction hotel parking garage.

Soon after initial response, crews were pulled out from inside the structure because some of the walls were beginning to crack and parts of the ceiling were beginning to fall, according to Assistant Fire Chief Trisha Wolford.

The worst of the fire was on the second, third and fourth floors of the building, and in addition to scaffolding, furniture and other construction materials provided fuel to the fire.

Crews remained on scene through the night, putting out hot-spots, and will remain on scene likely into Saturday evening. They are still being kept out of the building until it can be inspected further.

That inspection is currently scheduled for Monday according Wolford.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but foul play is not being ruled out.

“Everything is considered fair play, until we can rule things out,” said Wolford, “we are working with Sacred Heart to get security video. Right now it is listed as under investigation and a big part of that is the safety of the community and my firefighters because nobody is going in right now. We are little slower than usual because of that, but safety is our first priority. “

She says the building has been fenced off and you are asked to avoid the immediate area. If hot-spots do continue to pop up, crews will remain on scene, rotating in and out hour by hour, until the threat is mitigated.
