Spokane Civic Theatre hosting unprecedented costume sale
SPOKANE, Wash. — It’s out with the old and in with the new as the Spokane Theatre puts price tags on 5,000 of their costumes in an effort to raise money for future productions.
Costume designers with the Civic Theatre said in recent months they took inventory of all of their costume storage centers and realized they had way more costumes than they could ever use, about 25,000 thanks to hundreds of productions in the last 70 or so years.
Spokane Civic Theatre costume designer Madison Hendricks explained, “the way I like to think about it is we have a relationship with the community here. We are Spokane’s Civic Theatre. With this, someone can get a great piece and we get money to support our next season to keep making great quality theatre. That is all we really want to do!”
The sale has everything from recognizable pieces you’ve seen on stage in your favorite productions (think Belle’s beautiful yellow dress in “Beauty and the Beast,” and Pink Ladies jackets from “Grease), to mens suits, fur coats, flapper dresses and period gowns.
Costumes are priced to move, with items as low as $5. Hendricks said the most a costume will set you back is around $50. Many pieces have been handmade, hand-painted or hand-beaded.
The sale takes place inside of the Theatre’s former costume storage area at 1020 N Howard Street. The entrance to the sale is located at the Firth J. Chew Studio, on the southeast side of the building. It is on the third floor and accessible by stairway, only.
The hours of the sale are:
Friday, April 19: 12 PM – 4 PM
Saturday, April 20: 9 AM – 4 PM
Monday, April 22: 2 PM – 6PM
