Spokane alpinist feared dead in Canadian avalanche
SPOKANE, Wash. — Three of the world’s best climbers, including a Spokane man, are presumed dead.
Spokane’s Jess Roskelley, 36, was attempting to climb M16 on Howse Peak on the Icefields Parkway, in Alberta, Canada, when an avalanche happened Wednesday, according to local authorities and Gripped Climbing Magazine.
He was climbing with Austrian climbers David Lama and Hansjörg Auer.
Jess Roskelley became the youngest American to climb Mt. Everest when he was 20-years-old, in 2003. Since then, he’s conquered routes across South America, Asia, and North America.
He is the son of legendary mountaineer John Roskelley. His father told KXLY that the community can keep his family in their thoughts and prayers during this hard time and focus on the extraordinary life his son has lived.
This is a developing story.
