SPD: Man arrested for speeding through downtown, crashing into Fox Theater

SPOKANE, Wash. — A man is accused of speeding through downtown Spokane, narrowly missing a pedestrian and crashing into the Fox Theater.

Spokane Police arrested 32-year-old Jesse Johnson near Sprague Ave and Monroe St. Tuesday morning.

According to a release from SPD, multiple witnesses called to report a car had crashed into the theater and the driver was running away from the scene.Prosecutors rule officer-involved shooting justified

Witnesses told police the car had been driving between 60 and 70 mph and running red lights. Before hitting the theater, the driver crashed into a solar powered garbage can that will cost $7,000 to repair, police said.

A drug recognition expert responded and evaluated Johnson, who was taken to the hospital and is currently under investigation for multiple crimes related to the crash and potential impairment.

Johnson has also been placed under arrest for a Governor’s warrant issued in Washington on April 16 for charges related to an investigation out of Mariposa County, California for burglary and gold theft.

Johnson has been in trouble with Spokane Police before, too. In 2012, officers responded to reports of a man shooting a shotgun near Mission and Napa. In that incident, Johnson was shot by a police officer and survived his wounds.
