Sound Off for July 31: How do you react to catcalling?
SPOKANE, Wash. — So many women know what it’s like to be harassed as they walk down the street, but now a revealing new video is giving some men a sense of what it’s really like, showing them what really happens when their girlfriends are the target.
Cosmopolitan.com decided to raise awareness by following three women on the streets of New York City, then filming their boyfriend’s reaction to some of the crass. You can watch the video here.
“I think that men are really surprised because they don’t face the same issue when they go walk to the drug store or go run an errand,” Amy O’Dell, Cosomopolitan.com Editor, said.
But there are plenty of people who know catcalling is wrong, but don’t know what to do.
“Any man or woman that sees someone being catcalled, should intervene,” Paul Carrick Brunson, Relationship Expert, said. “The most important thing we can do when it comes to catcalling or street harassment is to teach young boys never to disrespect any woman.”
The video is an effort to clean up the conversation and say “so long” to street harassment for good.
What do you think? Does catcalling offend you and how do you react? What should be done?
