Security camera catches thief stealing packages from northeast Spokane home
SPOKANE, Wash. — Right as a northeast Spokane family was pulling up to their home on Tuesday, they saw a man running away from their front door with two packages in his hand- including a special part of a child’s Halloween costume for the next day.
The family reached out to share their video with KXLY, but asked not to be shown or named out of fear the thief might live near them.
They told KXLY they tried to catch the man- or at least the license plate of the vehicle he was in, but were not able to. They checked their surveillance footage and saw him walk up, grab the parcels and quickly leave.
The family said it’s not the first time they’ve been victims of this kind of crime, but that’s not stopping them from sending out a warning to others. They reported the theft to Crime Check, and sent in the surveillance video but have not heard back at this time.
KXLY has spoken with the Spokane Police Department about delivery thefts on several occasions, especially near the start of the holiday delivery season.
Not giving thieves the opportunity to steal your purchases – is the key. SPD recommends keeping deliveries out of sight from the street or the sidewalk, asking a neighbor to keep the package until you get home, or arranging a delivery with the delivery service that at least conceals the package in some way.
SPD says it can be hard – even with security camera footage, to track down package thieves.
The sooner a crime can be reported – ideally when it’s still in progress – the better chance law enforcement has, as thieves might stay in the same area.
If you do witness a crime being committed – call 911. If you are the victim of a package theft, SPD encourages you to report the crime as quickly as possible.
