Seahawks make Wilson NFL’s highest paid player

The Seattle Seahawks will make quarterback Russell Wilson the highest paid player in the NFL, after reaching an agreement on a contract extension before Wilson’s self-imposed midnight deadline.

Wilson made the announcement himself, saying, “Hey, Seattle. We got a deal,” in a video he tweeted early Tuesday morning.

While the Seahawks have yet to make an official announcement on a contract extension with Wilson, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the agreement is a 4 year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus. Including the one year remaining on the Super Bowl winning quarterback’s current contract, Wilson is now under contract with the Seahawks through the 2023 season at a total of $157 million.

That makes Wilson, 30, the highest paid player in the NFL, surpassing Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Last season, Wilson threw for 3,448 yards and a career-high 35 touchdowns, leading the Seahawks to a 10-6 record in the regular season. Seattle lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs.

Wilson was drafted by the Seahawks in 2012 and has played his entire NFL career in Seattle.
