Sandpoint residents stay hopeful after destructive fire
SANDPOINT, Idaho — Flames destroyed 100 years of history and hard work in a matter of hours Monday morning.
A historic Sandpoint building was stripped to the bones. The damage spanned five businesses, two were completely lost.
It was hard to stomach for Corey Obenauer and the rest of the community.
“They’re hardworking individuals and it’s their livelihood, ya know? They’re down here all the time taking care of business,” Obenauer said.
Obenauer knew how much went into keeping those shops going because he’s a business owner, too. He owns Burlwood Dreams, which is right across from the shops that caught fire.
“It’s so hard to find words to say because that’s their life. They get up and they come down here and they work their little shops and their businesses and their restaurants,” Obenauer said.
The fire caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
“It’s gonna affect a lot of people and it’s certainly going to affect the downtown,” Obenauer said.
For the Sandpoint community, it’s more than just dollars and cents. It’s about history and lending a helping hand in the name of this town’s future.
Rich Faletto has called Sandpoint home for 34 years and knows what the city is all about.
“This is a very caring community. People tend to rally together,” Faletto said.
Another longtime Sandpoint resident, Carol Deaner, expects this time to be no different.
“I think the community will come forward and help support and try to find new locations for these people and work together as a team. That’s what this city is all about,” Deaner said.
Together, they’ll look to rebuild, no matter how hard it may seem.
“It’s going to be a winter that won’t be forgotten for a long time because of this devastation of fire,” Deaner said.
