Sam Strahan’s family issues statement to public

Sam Strahan, the victim, and the hero, of the Freeman High School shooting, was a big-hearted kid with a quirky smile. He was a son, a brother, a grandson, and a friend.

His family delivered a statement to Kxly4’s Robyn Nance about Sam. They want people to know their son is more than a statistic, and more than a victim.

Sam’s mother, Ami, is a very well-respected social worker. Not only did the family lose Sam this week, but in June, Ami’s husband died unexpectedly. Their pain is unimaginable.

Ami’s brother, Carl Adams, delivered the statement for her.

Here’s what they want you to know:

“I first want to thank the first responders, and the community for the outpouring of support and love for my son Sam. This is a very hard time for me, our family, all of Sam’s friends and our community. I am devastated! I am dealing with so many emotions surrounding this horrible tragedy, pain, anger, sadness, disbelief and within all those emotions is the fact that I am very proud that my son made a difference for others.

Sam had a huge heart and has been going through so much since the loss of his father. As a mother I am so proud to see that he responded to this situation in the exact same way that his father would have responded. Sam understood the value of life and we feel he really wanted to protect his friends, including Caleb, whom he knew, but despite reports, they were not best friends.

Sam will be missed terribly by so many and his quirky smile will be ingrained in my mind as I remember the beautiful soul that he had. My son is now with his dad in heaven, and I am certain his dad is giving him a huge hug and telling him how proud he is of him for his courage.

We would appreciate some time to grieve, reflect and process this tragedy and ask that all would respect our privacy during this very difficult time and refrain from blasting social media with stories and photos. It is also my hope that this situation will make individuals, schools and communities take seriously the consequences and the seriousness of threats from students, in whatever form.

Although we are believers in the 2nd amendment right to own guns, it is imperative that as responsible gun owners and parents we do our part to keep guns out of the hands of those that are too immature to handle them. This could have been prevented!”
