Rescue Crews Save Man at Fernan Lake

A 60-year old man was treated for non-life threatening injuries when his boat capsized at the east end of Fernan Lake this afternoon. The report came in at 12:25 p.m. that Patrick H. Hatfield from Coeur d’Alene was clinging to the boat and was not wearing a personal flotation device.

Rescue crews arrived on the scene and found the boat approximately 120 yards from the shoreline. He was pulled from the water and transported to the east Fernan Lake boat launch by a Sheriff’s patrol boat. He told the rescue crew that he was attempting to get his 12-foot flat bottom boat up on plan, when a gust of wind caught the bow of the boat and caused it to flip over onto its left side.

After Hatfield’s rescue, deputies investigated the scene and found a personal flotation device in the boat, but because it was overturned, Hatfield was unable to gain access to it. It was determined that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department would recommend that anybody recreating on or around the water, wear a personal flotation device.
