Rent increases rescinded for tenants at N. Spokane senior apartment complex
SPOKANE, Wash. — Tenants of a North Spokane senior apartment building had their rent increases rescinded on Thursday.
Vintage Apartments residents were notified of the increases earlier this summer by FPI Management, a California-based company that manages the complex. The complex is a tax credit property, which means it is owned the management company participates in the federal low-income housing tax credit program.
The increases were based off of HUD’s allowable yearly increase numbers, but varied by tenant. In June, some tenants said they would be required to pay an increase of upwards of $100. FPI Management said the average rent increase would have been around $42 for a single room apartment and $51 for a double.
The Tenants Union of Washington worked with Spokane City Councilwoman Kate Burke and the Northwest Justice Project to help tenants.
In a Facebook post, the union said 140 tenants signed a letter to FPI Management requesting their rent increases be rescinded due to hardship on tenants in the senior apartment complex. On Thursday, the day that several tenants were expected to begin paying the increased rent costs, it was announced they had been rescinded.
The Tenant’s Union said the rescission was possible because the tenants had just cause protection and “organized without fear of being served a no cause notice to vacate.”
Burke posted the following statement on her Facebook page Friday:

It is my job to write policy to ENSURE safety and protection for families in our community. I will continue to advocate for stronger policies to keep companies accountable and keep people in their homes. ”
