According to a release sent to KXLY by KQQQ radio in Pullman, at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, Whitman county correctional officers found 67-year-old Dean Funabiki unresponsive hanging from the bed in his cell. Officers and EMS personnel immediately attempted lifesaving measures on Funabiki, and he was transported to Whitman Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to Brett J. Myers with the Whitman County Sherrif, “At this time, investigators from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office will be working jointly with the Whitman County Coroner’s Office to determine cause and manner of death. This investigation is ongoing.”

Original Story:

A Pullman therapist was arrested Friday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female client in January.

Dr. Dean Funabiki turned himself in to the Pullman Police Department around 10:30 p.m. Friday. Funabiki was accompanied by his attorney to the police department and turned himself at the request of investigators. He was arrested and booked on a charge of second-degree rape and was transported to the Whitman County Jail.

A female Pullman resident in her 40’s reported to police that Funabiki sexually assaulted her during a therapy session in January. The assault allegedly occurred in Funabiki’s office at 1205 SE Professional Mall Blvd. Investigators used swabs collected from the victim during a sexual assault examination. DNA samples were collected from Funabiki after investigators obtained a search warrant. The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab positively matched Funabiki’s DNA to victim swabs collected from private areas of the victim’s body consistent with the sexual assault.

Second-degree rape includes rape when the perpetrator is a health care provider and the alleged victim is a client or patient, and the sexual intercourse occurs during a treatment session.
