Police: Mother murdered, daughter fighting for her life
SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane woman was found murdered in her own garage on Sunday, and her youngest daughter was almost killed, as well.
Three children have lost their mom, and now that little girl is fighting for her life after that vicious attack.
We’re told by a close family friend that the girl made it through surgery, and Spokane Police say she is in critical condition in the ICU.
“Taken way too young,” said family friend Kimberley Domitrovich, “and now we have three children without a mom.”
That mom, friends say, was Kassie Dewey — a mom whose own daughter nearly died along with her Sunday afternoon.
Around 2 p.m., a neighbor reported that a car was left running in a closed garage. First responders found a man half-conscious near the vehicle. They also found Kassie with what police described as “clear traumatic injuries,” and a five-year-old girl — still alive — but also badly hurt as well.
“I can only imagine the last couple hours of Kassie’s life,” remarked Domitrovich.
Domitrovich was a close family friend. She knew Kassie for nearly 20 years. She was worried about Dewey’s safety in her most recent relationship, and even mentioned that to her own family.
“I know when they’re in their 30s like this, we can’t tell them what to do,” said Domitrovich. “But she’s in danger and I said, ‘One day he’s going to kill her.’”
More than a day later, Spokane Police still won’t release the man’s name. He’s still at the hospital and not under arrest. But they did say there is no other threat related to this case.
We do know that Dewey was a mental health technician who worked at Eastern State Hospital, and that her friends and family are grieving her tonight.
“She fought like hell to save that baby, and in the end, she lost her life,” said Domitrovich.
Family and friends are holding a candlelight vigil for Kassie in Franklin Park on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Police say they won’t release the man’s name until he’s formally charged.
There is a recovery fund set up for the family here.
