Officer shot, suspect killed in Coeur d’Alene shootout

A Coeur d’Alene police officer was shot and a suspect killed during a shootout in Coeur d’Alene Tuesday night.

The shooting happened near Hattie Ave and Government Way just after 7 p.m.

Police say a field training officer and trainee stopped an individual in the area of Hattie and Government way. Upon discovering the person had a felony warrant, the officers went to place the suspect in custody. That’s when police say the suspect opened fire.

According to Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White, the suspect, who has been identified as Curtis Bradley Ware, exited the car and opened fire, hitting Coeur d’Alene Police Officer Charles Hatley in the stomach.

Ware was later shot multiple times, and was pronounced dead at Kootenai Medical Center. He was wanted on drug charges and has a criminal history going back to 2003.

Police say two others were with Ware when he opened fire on police. Eli Darby and Trenton Szafransky were each arrested on drug charges and their bonds have been set at $15,000 each.

Officer Hatley was conscious and talking before he went into surgery.

A handgun was recovered from the scene.

According to Police Chief White, more info on the incident will come from Idaho State Police, who is the lead agency on the use of force.
