A Royal City Police officer is on paid administrative leave pending investigation of Monday’s officer-involved shooting.

Ofc. R. Rodriguez answered a possible domestic violence assault call at 200 Hemlock Ave. at 5:10 p.m. that led to probable cause to arrest Pedro Salgado Ceja, 45.

Ceja resisted and wielded a shovel, chasing Rodriguez on foot. He ordered Ceja to drop the shovel, but witnesses say he did not comply. Rodriguez fired six rounds from his sidearm into Ceja’s torso.

Rodriguez sent out a radio call for help at 5:18 p.m. Ceja was determined dead at the scene when multiple emergency agencies responded to his call at around 5:40 p.m.

The Grant County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Ceja’s cause of death was gunshot wounds to the torso.

The Columbia Basin Investigative Team will continue their investigation. Civilian witness statements and other evidence will be turned over to the Grant County Prosecutor for determination of the legality of the shooting.
