Donald Eugene McKay

Donald Eugene McKay died peacefully on December 13, 2018 at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on December 20, 1935 in Spokane. Graduating from Cheney High School, he attended Washington State College (now WSU) where he met his wife and life partner, Carol (Golob).

Don started his career in Medical Lake with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) when Interlake Hospital began operations. He retired 28 years later as the Plant Maintenance Supervisor. He was also a volunteer firefighter with Fire District 3 in Cheney for many years. In retirement, Don was an active member and officer with the Retired Public Employees Council (RPEC). He represented Northeastern Washington in Olympia where he helped to secure better conditions and benefits for State employees.

Don loved loud motors, whether boating on Priest Lake, racing hot cars, or on a riding lawnmower—all while enjoying a good cigar. He really enjoyed good Scotch and heckling Huskies, and was a life-long supporter of Cougar Football!

Don is survived by his wife, Carol; his sister Barbara (Richard) VanVleck; 3 sons: David (Pam), Mike (Simone), Ron; daughter Joanne; 3 grandchildren: Lindsay, Kendra and Clayton McKay; numerous nieces and nephews ; and his 105 year old mother, Sarah Leinweber McKay. He was preceded in death by his father Bruce R. McKay. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the Deaconess Hospital ICU and CCU staff.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 26, 2019 at 2pm, at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 W Government Way, Spokane, WA. A reception will follow.

Don’s ashes will be interred during a private ceremony at the Moran Cemetery.
