Weather perception vs. reality
Nope, it hasn’t been especially windy this spring

“It’s been extra windy this spring!” I hear that every spring, and every spring I check the wind records. Almost without exception, the winds are right around what we should expect.

After a few comments from viewers about our winds this spring, I checked the records. Our March winds were actually quite a bit below average! March is, on average, our windiest month. The average wind speed at Spokane International Airport in March is 9.7 mph, but this March, the wind speed only averaged 6.4 mph. The peak wind gust was 33 mph.

April 2019 was exactly average. April is our second windiest month, with an average wind speed of 9.5 mph, and that is what was recorded at the airport this April . The peak wind gust was 49 mph.

May is our third windiest month with an average wind speed of 9.2. So far, we’re running a little below average with an average wind speed of 8.5 mph.

I’m not entirely sure why people perceive that things have been extra windy every spring. I’m happy to hear your theories. I’m also happy to check the weather records if things ever seem out of wack to you. Some times they are! But spring winds are pretty reliable in the Inland Northwest.
