No. 1 Zags stunned in WCC Championship by Saint Mary’s, lose 60-47
LAS VEGAS — Second-seeded Saint Mary’s used an uncharacteristically poor shooting night from top-seeded Gonzaga to win in the WCC Championship, 60-47 after leading for a majority of the game.
The Bulldogs got off to a 9-2 start, but the Gaels fought back with 13 first half points from Tanner Krebs to take a three point lead at halftime. Gonzaga was held to a season-low 24 first-half points.
Killian Tillie got the Zags within 1 with 12 minutes to go in the second half off one of Josh Perkin’s 4 assists, a score of 40-39, but that’s as close as they’d come.
Saint Mary’s shot 45% from the field and nailed several tough shots to extend and hang on for a 13-point win, disrupting Gonzaga’s 6-game winning streak in the WCC Championship.
Brandon Clarke led the Zags with 16 points, Josh Perkins chipped in 10, but also committed five turnovers on the night.
The Gaels earn the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, while Gonzaga will hope to remain a number 1 seed come Selection Sunday on March 17th.
