No. 1 basketball recruit Chet Holmgren commits to Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. — Thousands turned into ESPN and Instagram Live Monday to watch as Chet Holmgren announced he will play basketball at Gonzaga.
“Next fall, I will be a Gonzaga bulldog!” he said live on ESPN.
Holmgren attends Minnehaha Academy, a private Christian school in Minneapolis, where he played with Gonzaga freshman Jalen Suggs. He’s a 7-1, 195 pound center and is the top-ranked recruit in the Class of 2021 by ESPN and 247 Sports. Holmgren has grabbed accolades including Naismith Prep Player of the Year, Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year, Sports Illustrated All-American Player of the Year, MaxPreps National Player of the Year, and is an McDonald’s All-American.
His senior season, Holmgren put up 21 points and 12.3 rebounds per game and shoots 80% from the field.
He is the top-ranked recruit GU has ever landed.
“Chet is going to be a great addition to our program, and all of us are looking forward to getting to work with him and starting the next step in his career,” said Gonzaga men’s basketball head coach Mark Few said. “He is a big-time winner, comes from a great family, and will be a great teammate.”
The top basketball prospect selected the Zags over Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina and Ohio State.
