SPOKANE, Wash. -- With the temperatures ramping up for the summer, it's important to remember how to stay protected from the sun, especially on Don't Fry Day!
The Spokane Regional Health District has a few tips for you to follow so you don't get unexpectedly burnt.
Today is Don't Fry Day! With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it's a great time to think about how we can protect our skin from the sun as many of us get outdoors to enjoy the unofficial start of summer. pic.twitter.com/LRzv9bYTKB
Sun-protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses can help protect your body from damaging UV rays.
Avoid peak rays
It's better to stay in the shade when the sun's rays are most intense, which is usually around 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wear sunscreen
Sunscreen is the best way to protect yourself from getting sunburnt. When choosing a sunscreen, you should select one with at least SPF 30, "Broad Spectrum" labeled on the bottle, and water resistant, if you're sweating or in the water.
The SRHD says 9 out of 10 skin cancers are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, so staying protected when the sun's out has much bigger benefits than you may realize.
