SPOKANE, Wash. - On January 25, a sexual assault was reported to Gonzaga Campus Security & Public Safety.
According to the university, the assault took place in an on-campus residence hall late Saturday, January 19 or early Sunday, January 20. They say the victim knew the alleged assailant.
Gonzaga Campus Security directed the victim to the appropriate campus resources, and a Title IX investigation is now underway. The investigation will include a process of information gathering, which will be reviewed and analyzed using the preponderance of evidence standard. This means the investigator will determine whether it was "more likely than not" that the alleged conduct occurred. A written report will then describe the outcome of the investigation.
The university is required by the federal Clery Act to collect and publish stats about crimes that happen on and around campus.
GU's latest report showed seven rapes reported in campus housing in 2015, two instances in 2016, and two in 2017.
During those same three years, Gonzaga reported 14 cases of fondling, 10 cases of dating violence, seven cases of on-campus stalking, and four instances of domestic violence.
A spokesperson for GU declined an on-camera interview with KXLY and issued this statement instead:
"Thank you for your inquiry about Clery Act notifications distributed on campus last Friday.
Gonzaga is deeply committed to the safety and security of our students. Our care extends to all students while maintaining our obligations under the Clery Act to inform the campus community as required.
As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further."
