SPOKANE, Wash. - There is a way you could save $500 to $1,000 dollars, if you are upgrading your old wood burning stove.
The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency is offering an incentive for residents transitioning from a wood burning stove and fireplace inserts to a new wood, pellet, or gas device that is cleaner and more efficient.
According to Spokane Clean Air, from October through March, residential wood heating is the largest contributor to fire particle pollution in our area.
"There are many benefits to upgrading old wood stoves," said Woodard. "Not only will you save money on heating costs, but you are taking active steps to protect your family's health by reducing dust and soot in your home.
There are a few requirements to be eligible for this program:
- Must be homeowner living in the Smoke Control Zone or living in city limits of Deer Park
- Must regularly heat with a wood burning stove or fireplace insert made before 1995 and is not certified by the EPA
The discount amount is subtracted from the purchase and installation costs of the new device by a participating home heating/hearth business. The discount is based on the type of device selected for the upgrade.
- $500 toward wood
- $750 toward pellet
- $1,000 toward gas stove or ductless mini-slit heat pump
This program launched over the summer and is paid for by a one-year clean air grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology. There is money for about 50 more change-outs.
