Quincy man leads officers on chase, dies in custody at the hospital

QUINCY, Wash. - A 29-year-old Quincy man died while in police custody at the hospital Monday night.

According to a release from the North Central Washington Special Investigation Unit, Quincy Police

Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation just after 9 p.m.

The driver, later identified as Marcos Avalos-Barrera, failed to stop and led officers on a chase in and around Quincy for over an hour. Multiple agencies responded and Avalos-Barrera voluntarily stopped around 10:15 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after he was taken into custody, Avalos-Barrera complained he was not feeling well. He was taken to Quincy Valley Hospital around 10:25 p.m.

Officers were granted a search for Avalos-Barrera's blood, as they believed he was impaired. While at QVH, Avalos-Barrera declined rapidly and died despite efforts by medical staff at the hospital.

The NCWSIU is now investigating the in-custody death.
